Today (31 May 2025) is the Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday where everyone eats rice dumplings. So in today’s art class, we chose the festival and rice dumplings as our theme.
Children who grow up here in Australia are usually more familiar with Western holidays because they come with public holidays, but they may know less about traditional festivals from other countries, like China. That’s why today’s class was not only about drawing, but also about introducing the Dragon Boat Festival. The kids found it very interesting as many of them had never heard of the festival or tried a rice dumpling before. Some said they had seen them being sold when walking past certain shops in Burwood Chinatown but didn’t know what they were.
In our art class, we don’t just focus on drawing techniques, but we also use different holidays as opportunities to promote cultural understanding. After class, when the parents came to pick up their children, everyone was really happy. The kids were excited to show their paintings and told their parents what they had learnt.
